Excuses--Excuses!

I wish to explain why I have been so slow in updating this blogsite.  I moved into the Inn On Westport, Assisted Living, at the end of August.  It was not an easy move, as I had to get rid of many, many of my lifelong possessions--a very difficult task as I am sure many of you can relate to.  My computer had been operating so slow and sluggish, so I decided to replace it at this time also. There was some trouble in transferring files from the old to the new computer, and just today I am able to use it once again.  I'll try to get caught up, the best I can, as soon as possible.

The 13th Biennial All-Class Reunion was held June 6, 2010 in the Tri-Valley School Multi-Purpose Room. Honored classes this year were 1934-1935 (75 years); 1949-1950 (50 years); and 1959-1960 (50 years). Following a very delicious pot luck dinner, a short meeting was held. The 26 students who had passed away during the past two years were remembered. Officers were elected for the next biennial reunion in 2012. Honored classes were recognized, as well as all other classes. Billy Tyler sold raffle tickets on a woodworking bowl he had created with the proceeds going to the Lyons reunion fund. Elmer Haugen reported that for the first time all members of the Haugen family were in attendance at the reunion.

School History

SCHOOL HISTORY

The new school at Lyons was built about 1920-1921 and the move into the new brick building was made after the Christmas holidays in 1922. The old building was sold to Finkle Bunde for use on his farm located just northwest of the school yard. All twelve grades were taught in the new building.

Previous to this, the Lyons school occupied the old school building which was located at the site of the new building. In addition, some of the grades were housed in what was known as the Larson building on the main street. The old school was a one-room building and was about 18’ x 24’ in size, built in 1879 or 1880. It had home-made seats and desks, and a blackboard was painted on one end of the room. A full set of maps, a historical map, a Manikin reading chart, a globe, and a lamp were gradually added as funds became available. An entry was built the entire length of the building.

Because the old building had to be moved out of the way in order to build the new school, school was temporarily held in the Larson building downtown and also at the house where Sam Wickre’s and Andy Lemme’s lived in later years. They also had school upstairs in a building east of Carlberg’s grocery store. Hilda Jacobson Dubbe, Selma Thompson Eitrheim, Marion Bowen Nelson, Nora Thompson Baalson, Miss Goshaw, Martha Almos, Christie Berdahl, and Lulu Barber Anderson were some of the new teachers then. The first high school principal was Frank Wagner. Later on, Art Baalson was superintendent, and he married Nora Thompson who was a grade school teacher. Some other high school teachers during those first years included Mary Geigh and Sophia Fanebust.

Previous to the consolidation, there were a number of school districts: District #53 which was the old Lyons school district; District #135 known as the Winter School; and District #66. Among the pioneer teachers of these we find the names of Harriet Fuller, Lincoln Disbrow, Jennie Raymond, Maggie Nicholson, Mr. Williams, Austin C. Risty, Adolph Hamre, and Lucinda Kolaas. Some of the pioneer students were John Sherry; Mamie Sherry; Alice Fuller; Susie Fuller; Oscar and Gust Carlberg; Gunder and Annie Bunde; Annie, Carl and Anton Anderson; and Mills Fuller.

In order to have Christmas programs, operettas, plays, etc., a large temporary stage was built on the east end of the gym, with a curtain that could be pulled between acts of the play. It had to be taken down so basketball could be played. People watching games had to sit on benches along the sides, or stood or sat on chairs up in the hallway on the west end. Some sat on the stairways. Finally, in 1936, with the help of WPA workers, a stage area plus 6 feet was added to the east end of the gym. Then the pep band and cheering squad could sit on stage at ball games.

The number of high school students increased. Crooks High School had classes for only two years at a time, so they came to Lyons for the last two years. Eventually, in 1937, the Crooks School closed. They then had to travel to Lyons for their four years of high school or go elsewhere. Eighth grade graduates from country schools became freshmen in Lyons. Busses were run to the outlying homes in the school district. It was necessary for some students to walk a long distance to catch the bus, or they had to have their own transportation. Lincoln Brendtro started to drive a bus from Crooks while he was still a student. Heat in the busses during winter months was provided by an exhaust pipe running under the seats, which were benches along the sides. Some students had to stand in the aisle, while most of the older high school kids held the smaller ones on their lap. Usually the last ones on had to stand.

In 1937 Lyons won their first District basketball tournament, and the team was honored with a banquet. They sat at a table on the stage, while other people were in the gym area. Esther Warwick and Madeline Larson were the waitresses. Colton High School was the main opponent on the basketball court during those years of the 1930’s.

In the early 1930’s, an orchestra was formed with Mr. Lee as director, and later, at times it performed as a band, without the string instruments,

The last indebtedness bonds of the school were burned in 1945. Remodeling was done at different times to accommodate the number of students who attended. Manual training was held for a time in the attic. A small room above the office was used as a teacher retreat room. Most rooms were used for different classes as the students sat in the Assembly and went to other classrooms from there. Some classes were held in the Assembly also.

In 1960 a gymnasium was built behind (or east) of the original school building. It included a stage and restrooms. Later on a kitchen and a music room were added to the north end. Then the hot lunch program really “took off”. Wrestling also was held in the chorus/band/music room. After lunch, grade room children had physical education in this gym area.

On May 24, 1966 a special election created Tri-Valley Independent School District No. 153. In May of 1967 the last class graduated from Lyons High School after having graduated 45 classes and a total of about 751 students. On July 1, 1967 the new district went into effect, combining Colton, Lyons, Crooks and other small common school districts. School was then held at the three sites. All high school basketball games were held in the Lyons Gym until the gym was finished in the new Tri-Valley School . Construction began in 1998 of an addition to the new school, located west of Lyons, and in the fall of 1999 all formal education in the district was held at one site for the first time.

The history of Lyons High School is much more than written above. So much could be written about the sports, the music, the drama, the education, the bus rides, the friendships. Lyons High School was much more than just a building. It shaped our lives; it made us what we are today. Our roots will forever be with Lyons High!!

School Reunion - June 1, 2008

Lyons High School 2008 All Class Reunion Report

The 2008 Lyons High School All Class Reunion was held June 1, 2008, at the Tri-Valley School gym with a potluck dinner. Honored classes were the students from 1932-33 for 75 years; 1947-48 for 60 years; and 1957-58 for 50 years.

Class roll call was taken with special recognition given to the honored classes. Twenty-nine classes were represented with 163 in attendance of which 116 were alumni. Orlando Fossum, Sioux Falls, was the only attendee from the class of 1932, celebrating 75 years. He shared his wit and humor with those in attendance. Those traveling the furthest were from all corners of the United States. Ron Clauson, class of 1958, came from Seminole, FL; Milton Woken, class of 1951, from Bakersfield, CA; and Lyle Frederickson, class of 1946, Anthem, AZ.

Following the meal, a representative from each class gave a report. Ila Ahrendt’s name was drawn as winner of the raffle, a bowl of her choice donated by Bill Tyler (1941). Volunteers were sought for the next all school reunion to be held in 2010. New members for the Reunion committee are Don and Marlene (Linge) Nelson (1961), Juanita (Cap) Geischer (1961), and Gordon Johnson (1962).

Before adjourning, Ruth Rehn was recognized for her 34 years with the South Dakota High School Activities Association. Ruth started girls’ athletics in South Dakota and brought programs to a level of equal status with boys’ programs in South Dakota.

Those in attendance enjoyed fellowship following the meeting.

Recommendations for the 2010 Committee

TO THE 2010 REUNION COMMITTEE

Reservations for the 2010 reunion have already been made with Brad McDonald, Activities Director, Tri-Valley High School. Dates for this reunion are June 5-6, 2010. We would advise that these dates be reconfirmed in January 2009, and in January 2010.

FIVE MONTHS BEFORE:
February - mail cards. Cards mailed for 2008 reunion were printed at Staples. 400 were printed @ $19.03. Ila had someone create the card on the computer. Glenn Johnson, 338-9255, will know the number of cards needed and will print the labels.

Confirm number of fold-down and 8-ft. tables needed for the reunion to insure that they will be available. (The 2008 committee neglected to do this and we were short tables-not enough 8 fts. as some used for graduation parties).

Arrange for PA system and coffee pots. Note: you will need to furnish your own
coolers for water and juice. There was only one 100 cup coffee pot that worked; so two committee members furnished two smaller ones for decaf coffee. In addition, a small pot was used to make coffee following the meeting.

1-2 WEEKS BEFORE:
1. Contact the custodian to arrange a time on Saturday to set up tables and hook
up the PA system.
2. Make sure required number of tables is available. (Because of split lunchroom,
tables we needed were in another room where the floor had been waxed and were not accessible.

DAY BEFORE:
Set up all tables for reunion. Best if 3-4 help. PS We had 13-14 tables, which was not enough. Honored classes were well attended and not at all happy that they had to double up on tables.
Recommend 18-20 tables.

Following are guideline for table use based on what we had available.

We purchased a roll of plastic table cover at Party America to cover the tables of the honored classes. We also got some flowers and simple balloon bouquets for the tables.

We took down all tables, took out the garbage, cleaned up the kitchen, and swept the gym floor.

Custodian (Sunday)
We met him at 10:30 a.m. to finish above details. Sent him check for $40.00 for his help.

On the following page is a suggested table configuration for improving traffic flow and hopefully minimize congestion as alumni arrive. This configuration is a result of our wrap-up meeting. It is entirely up to you as to whether you decide to use it or come up with a better idea.

Our reasoning for the registration tables along the north wall was that everyone comes in with food that must be put on the serving tables. The door opening became very congested right before 1:00 p.m. and we just thought this might alleviate the bottleneck.

Also, we felt two serving lines would work better to speed up serving. It seemed to take so long with just one line.

Class tables could be arranged in such a way to better utilize the open floor space in the middle of the gym. Also, maybe the free will offering table should be at the beginning of the serving tables.

2006 REUNION

The 2006 Lyons High School All-Class Reunion was held on June 4, 2006, at the Tri-Valley School All-Purpose Room with a potluck lunch. Honored classes this year were the students from 1930-1931 for 75 years; 1945-1946 for 60 years; and 1955-1956 for 50 years.

A class roll call was made paying special attention to our honored classes. There were 27classes represented with 131(or more) people attending; 103 were alumni. The oldest alumnus attending was Agnes (Schjodt) Larson, a 93 year young graduate from the class of 1930, who had traveled from Arlington, SD, to attend. She was the only one from her class attending. It appears that Jerry Thompson (1956) and his wife Carol from Chino Hills, CA, traveled the furthest to attend. It seemed to have been a toss-up of who had the most fun. There was enough food to feed an entire “Thrash Run” (and GOOD I may add). There are many good cooks who graduated from Lyons so one can say that the Home-Ec class was probably the best received and remembered.

When everyone had eaten, we made a plea for someone to accept where we left off. The new members of the Reunion Committee for 2008 are: Pat Nelson Buechler (1959), Rosemary Byg Mohrhausen (1964), Doris Osvog Bushard (1963), Ruth Rehn (1962), and Ila Rehn Ahrendt (1960). All our hats are off to this fine crew. We all gave a free will offering to get them on their way.

We then had a chance to mingle with friends and classmates, some of whom we hadn’t seen for nearly 50 years or more.

We are looking forward to 2008 when we can meet again. It will be interesting to see that everyone else has gotten so much older while we all stay the same.

2004 REUNION

The school reunion held on June 6, 2004, reunited former Lyons High School classmates for a potluck dinner at the Tri-Valley School Multi-Purpose Room. Honored classes this year were students from the years 1928-1929 for 75 years, 1943-1944 for 60 years; and 1953-1954 for 50 years.

Vinette Byg Skow led in devotions and remembrances for those who had passed away since the last reunion, followed by a delicious potluck meal. Monetary donations were requested, and a total of $262.50 was collected. After eating, the honored classes were introduced, followed by a roll call of classes during the years 1927-1967, which showed 93 former students present. There were also 41 guests registered. The oldest class member present was from the class of 1933.

The committee of Marilyn Osvog VanLiere, Maxine Johnson Boxdorfer, Joey Peterson Berge, and Norman Varns and all the others who helped throughout the day were thanked.

A sing-along was led by Paul Johnson and Doris Bushard.

2002 REUNION

The school reunion held on June 2, 2002 reunited former Lyons High School classmates for a potluck dinner at the Tri-Valley School Multi-Purpose Room. Honored classes this year were students from the years 1926-1927 for 75 years; 1941-1942 for 60 years; and 1951-1952 for 50 years.

Vinette Byg Skow led in devotions followed by a delicious potluck meal. After eating, all the former school cheerleaders led the group in singing the school fight song. Lester Fossum was celebrating his 90th birthday and so the group sang “Happy Birthday” to him.

Reunion chairman Marvin Wieman read the list of 26 former students who had passed away since the last reunion. Honored classes were introduced, followed by a roll call of classes during the years 1923 - 1967, which showed 103 former students present.

Chairman Wieman thanked the members of his committee who consisted of Maxine Johnson Boxdorfer, Marilyn Osvog Van Liere, and Pearl Voelker Miller, and all the others who helped throughout the day.

The committee for the 2004 reunion will be Maxine Johnson Boxdorfer and Marilyn Osvog Van Liere as co-chairpersons, Joey Peterson Berge, and Norman Varns.

According to the registration and roll call figures, there were 103 former students in attendance and at least 26 guests, for a grand total of at least 129. Former students attending were:

2000 REUNION

Our school reunion on June 4, 2000, was very successful, and I believe that everyone present enjoyed their afternoon. According to our registration and roll call figures, there were 118 former students in attendance, 5 teachers, and at least 52 guests, for a grand total of at least 175. Glenn Johnson had published a Lyons High School booklet with class rosters and pictures which was on sale during the day.

The 2000 Reunion Committee consisted of Glenn Johnson, Darlene Johnson Fletcher, and Joan Kelly Eitrheim, assisted by others throughout the day. They were thanked for all the work they had done.

Addresses Needed

Many of the postcard notices announcing the 2008 reunion were returned as undeliverable. We also are in need of addresses for many others also. If you know of an address, or the whereabouts of an individual, please notify me at september@sio.midco.net or insert it in the Comments section. We need addresses for the students whose names are listed in red in the class roster. In most cases, the Post Office will not deliver mail to persons living in an apartment without a Box Number.
